The five greatest TV shows

The Trap Door The plasticine adventures of big blue blob Berk, weird grey spider-thing Drutt, Boni the skull and countless creepy-crawlies, worms and monsters are among the finest and funniest animations ever put on screen. It’s hugely inventive, full of slapstick humour — Drutt is forever being squashed underfoot — and good-natured fun, this is among the best 160 minutes of telly ever made. The childlike glee with which Berk goes about his mundane job of looking after The Thing Upstairs, chasing escaped monsters and cooking pots of slime is magic to watch and the fact that Drutt seems to communicate by farting […]

Taste Test: Billy's chilli fries

I LOVE chilli fries. I realise this comes as no surprise to any of you who know me as I’ll eat just about anything, but for some chilli fries have a special place in my heart [attack]. I think it’s because it’s the closest I’ve come to finding the classic British dishes of chips and beans or chips and curry sauce. So when Mike announced he was heading to local deli Billy’s for a portion I followed him there, pausing only to wipe the drool off my Doc Martens.

And here it is, resplendent in its Styrofoam packaging which is […]

Another day, another diner

WE HEADED south this time, to the almost-a-trailer-park that is Orange County to try the Omelette Parlour in Costa Mesa. Jamie has been singing the praises of this place for ages so when the question of where to go for our weekly brekkies get-together came up she suggested the Omelette Parlour on Saturday so Ev could join us.

The menu is pretty extensive and they don’t just do omelettes. I was in the mood for something bacony and the Two To The Max seemed perfect: two large eggs, two slices of bacon, two slices of French toast and a large side of […]

The shape of things to come

YES, it’s a parody, but you just know this is going to be a reality one day.

Case in point: I found some spray-on honey mustard salad dressing in our work fridge the other day. All I could think was, “People are too lazy to tilt a fecking […]

Rue Brittania II

EVERY now and then I come across a piece of news that not so much depresses me, it crushes my very will to live.

I read this story on the BBC’s website about 30 minutes ago and I’m still reeling. To cut a long and sad story short, today is the funeral of Charlotte Avenall, a mentally-handicapped eight-year-old girl who was found hanging in her bedroom.

Let me just say that again: AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD GIRL HUNG HERSELF.

According to the story, neither of her parents had been in Charlotte’s room for four weeks. The walls, carpet and her toys were covered in feces. […]

Daemon dazed

SO I finished Daniel Suarez’s Daemon last night. Well I say “last night”, what I mean is somewhere between one and two in the morning. While it was certainly a gripping read I had some real problems suspending disbelief towards the end. Somehow the idea of 100 computer-controlled driverless cars smashing up downtown Oakland doesn’t do it for me anymore. Maybe I’m getting old.

But I will give Suarez one thing — the idea of the world being controlled by the kind of basement-dwellers who play MMORPGs is utterly terrifying.

Next up: God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Yeah, I know this is […]

It's been fun, America...

…but after reading this I think I’ll head back to my small, green, sane island. […]

GET TO DA CHOPPAH!

HOLY shit! They’ve made a sequel to Predator? And it’s directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Laurence Fishburn? How could this possibly fail?

<flashback to first time I saw Aliens v […]

The gratuitous 5.33am update

DANIEL SUAREZ’S Daemon has me hooked worse than a Fontana housewife on meth. It’s almost 6am and I’m still reading it. I’m having a slight problem believing some of the premise but I’m willing to suspend my disbelief on the grounds that the book is ball-bustingly good.

Must go, have more to […]
