RIP Madoc: May 2004-April 2011

madoc

MADOC, our oldest cat, had to be put to sleep last night. He lost the use of his back legs which we at first thought was the result of fighting with Iestyn, so we took him to a 24-hour vet where they discovered he had a genetic heart defect. A clot had passed from his heart and lodged near his spine, causing paraparesis. The vet recommended we had him put to sleep as there was little they could do for him.

We’re just glad we were there to comfort him at the end. And we’re glad it happened when we were home and he didn’t suffer alone and scared. We’ll miss him terribly. He was the first member of the family; we weren’t even thinking about getting a pet until we saw him in a cage outside PetCo. We’ll miss his little tricks — the way he stretched one paw out like a Hitler salute, the way he stretched one back leg which Ev greeted with the cry of “Reverse Hitler!”, his nose, which fluctuated between white and neon pink, and all the other things he did which made him a great cat. True, he was a bit dopey and clumsy but that just made him more special to us.

Even Emric and Iestyn know something is up. Emric is very restless and Iestyn is hiding under the bed. Both of us are glad that it wasn’t a result of one of Madoc and Iestyn’s regular fights as we’d both have a hard time knowing Iestyn was to blame. It’s going to be very odd not seeing Maddy legging it into the kitchen for brekkies tomorrow, or curled up on the sofa, and Ev will miss her morning time with him terribly. Sleep peacefully, little one.
