The wages of win

THE wages of sin may be death but the wages of win come in the form of a Sigma 10-20mm f4.0 – 5.6 wide-angle lens. I’ve wanted a wide-angle for a couple of years but the price — $750 for the Canon model — has always been a bit of a sore point. I almost got one last Christmas until I got nicked doing 82 on the 710 and had to pay a $500+ speeding ticket. Oops.

I bought the Sigma for two reasons: 1) it’s $300 cheaper than the Canon, and b) Blunty’s got one and loves it. As he’d recommended the last lens I bought, the Sigma […]

Tilt-shift photography: Attempt 1

I MADE it to the roof of the office this afternoon to get some photos for my attempt at making some tilt-shift pics. Luckily the building isn’t all that far from the junction of Wilson and Brand, which is a) very busy and b) the site of some of Glendale’s finest car crashes. Using my Sigma 18-50mm lens I snapped the first shot:

I followed this tutorial in Photoshop and got the following result (click for the bigger version):

The idea behind tilt-shift is to make the world look like it’s a miniature model. There are lenses available but as I’ve […]

I have to get into tilt-shift photography

TILT-SHIFT photography is this great way of manipulating the focal plane of your camera to render the world in miniature. It’s not macro, it’s way beyond that, as this video — a time-lapse of Mardi Gras shot using a TS lens — shows:

So off to Google I go to see if I can get a tilt-shift for my T1i. Sure enough I can… for $2,490. Ah. I can’t see Ev going for that, for some reason. I could get an adapter for $270. But there is a way of reproducing the effect in Photoshop, so […]

When the Ev's away...

…THE Mut will take the chance to act like a responsible adult and tidy up his bookcase. Well, one of them. I didn’t want to do this but the guy who normally supplies me with Thai hookers is refusing to provide any more until I give him proof that the previous three are indeed living happily in Sidcup and not, as he seems to suspect, scattered across several Southern California locations.

So to the bookcase. I personally don’t mind the hurricane-in-a-small-bookstore look but Ev feels it might be a nice to change to, you know, actually be able to see the books […]

My newest lens arrives

It’s a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 macro lens which set me back $400. Although I’ve been trying to stick to Canon lenses now I’ve got the T1i, the equivalent of this Sigma — the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM — would have set me back about a grand, so that was out.

I have to admit to becoming a bit of a lens snob since selling my old Sigma lenses along with my XT and switching to all-Canon glass, but I borrowed this model off Blunty when we were at Witley Court in October and was very impressed. The photos are sharp as a pin, it’s […]
