Game over, man! Game over!

AAARRRGGGHHH, dead again. Aliens is one of my favourite films (although it’s nowhere near as good as Alien) so when I heard of the new game Aliens: Colonial Marines I decided to pick it up on sight. Silly me.

From what I’ve read since playing it, after spending years in development Gearbox, the studio producing A:CM, decided to farm it out to another company to finish. The results aren’t too good, especially if you’re a big fan of Alien movies (except the fourth one, of course. That film never actually happened.)

A:CM posits itself as the actual sequel to Aliens. Weeks have passed […]

I’m making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS

ALTHOUGH I’m a huge fan of both Portal games I hadn’t got around to seeing Dan Trachtenberg’s short movie Portal: No Escape til about 10 minutes ago. And holy shit, it is superb. Looking more like the pre-credit sequence to a big-budget movie than a seven-minute short filmed by a commercial director, it gets just about everything right: the dystopian setting, the sense of bewilderment, the portal gun and the portals. They, in particular, a realised brilliantly; in the game they’re glowing holes, but Trachtenberg’s made them look as if they really are tearing through space and time. Danielle Rayne’s […]

Back on the game

ALL THREE of you might have noticed that Planet Mut’s not been updated as much as previously. There’s a simple reason for this: I’ve rediscovered videogames. Well, one videogame in particular.…

One fateful day (Boxing Day, to be precise) I decided to have a “quick” game of Half-Life 2. I loaded Steam and noticed they were having a sale on games. Ten minutes later I was the proud owner of all three Alien Breed remakes, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and a driving game called FlatOut:

I never even used to like racing games. I was always one for […]

But will there be cake?

PORTAL 2? Next year? I can’t wait that long for a sequel to Portal, I can play the bloody thing blindfolded. And I know all the words to Still Alive:

Portal, for those of you unfortunate enough not to have played/heard/cared about it, is a way of life videogame where you run around Aperture Science’s deserted research centre with only a portal gun and the voice of GlaDOS the insane computer for company. Each room presents a puzzle: how to move to the next one without falling to your death/being burned/shot by turrets/dissolved in […]

If you have Steam...

…NOW’S your chance to buy the classic 2000 Aliens v Predator game for $1.99. I just […]
