St Michael’s Church, Ledbury

BLUNTY arrived today expecting me to have found somewhere to visit and fortunately Siân kept him occupied for long enough while I desperately searched around Google Earth for somewhere to go. Using the age-old scientific method of “that looks OK” we headed out for Wenlock Priory in the village of Much Wenlock. On the way we stopped off in Ledbury, a market town in east Herefordshire that has several 17th century timbered buildings, medieval lanes and a pretty amazing church:

The Wenlock Priory photos are coming in about an […]

Croft Castle

I ENDED up at Croft Castle after getting hopelessly lost trying to find the village of Eardisland. The castle has been the home of the Croft family for almost 1,000 years. There was originally a medieval castle on the site, but the present house was built in the 17th century thus making it pretty new by British standards. Unfortunately it’s one of those places where you can’t take photos inside, so I just paid for access to the grounds, St Michael’s Church, and […]

Things to do in Hereford when you’re bored

1. Check out the teenage girls in skimpy tops.

1. Take photos of the graffiti on the hoarding around a burned-out building:

2. Er… that’s it, […]

Home.

THE only way life could be better would be if Ev was here. The flight was great as I managed to sleep for 7½ hours of it, the drive back with Paul was good, seeing the family was awesome and hearing Siân say, “I’m Uncle Matthew’s little booboo” was one of those moments where you wanted time to stop. I’ve even managed to stay awake past 8pm which is a first. But enough of this pointless babble — I’m off to […]

Littledean Jail

LITTLEDEAN JAIL is tucked away in the wilds of Gloucestershire just inside the Forest of Dean. Armed with a map taken from the site’s own contact page we still managed to get lost on the way, going through Cinderford twice and almost ending up on the banks of the Severn River before spotting the signs and avoiding a night of murder, buggery and cannibalism in the depths of the Forest.

Littledean Jail used to be a real jail (or gaol, to give it its Olde English spelling) but now it’s home to the Crime Through Time museum, a frankly bloody massive collection of […]

Polperro

POLPERRO is one of those little Cornish fishing villages that can only be described as “quaint”. It’s one of those places which is a maze of narrow twisty streets that lead to a beautiful harbour. Unfortunately it can also be described as “packed with tourists” but me and Ev braved the winding roads and crammed car park to have a look around. We’d already seen the place in 2003 and it had a big impact on us — both of us have wanted to go back for ages, so we took the opportunity and set off.

After wandering the village we took a boat […]

Tenby

WE ONLY ended up in Tenby thanks to me getting hopelessly lost in the wilds of west Wales. After driving all over the shop for something like five hours thanks to Google Maps’ directions and seemingly never-ending roadworks, I gave up on my initial plan of finding this place to buy a wall plaque for the house (it’s the last from bottom) and headed for the coast. This change of plan came as something of a surprise to my navigator as she’d been asleep for most of the trip.

Tenby’s rightly famous for being a pretty fishing port in south-west Wales, although […]

Back in the USA

AND, as always, thanks to (in no particular order): mum and dad for putting us up, the roast dinners, laundry and everything else; Paul for picking us up from Heathrow; Flynn, Becky, James, Helen and Sarah for the meals out (Mexican, Tibetan, Indian and Chinese), the boat trip, the Prince of Wales, introducing Ev to 2p machines and for generally being awesome; the Cornwall Posse for a great evening barbecuing food, tables and paper; Val and Helen for letting us stay and for trips to Mevagissey and Looe; Polperro for being bloody gorgeous; Lisa, Gareth and the kids for a great afternoon […]

Broome Farm

NO CREAM tea, I’m afraid, thanks to the rain, and no Ev either thanks to knackered feet. But photos were taken, mud was slipped on and cider was drunk. A result all round.

As you might have noticed, I went a tad nuts on the close-up pics. Ev and me are hoping to go back to Broome Farm once the weather clears up to have one of their amazingly huge and fantastic cream teas. Much fun has been had so far, especially with the adorable bundle of fun that is baby Sian (there are pics to come), and we’ve got trips to […]
