Taking the cakes

I ASKED Jamie to make me a 40th birthday cake based on my Mini, but I had no idea she’d do such a bloody amazing job of it. From the checkered roof to the bonnet stripes to the GB letters to the grille badges, it’s perfect.

Not to be outdone, Ev got this masterpiece made for me:

Further cementing her position of “absolutely awesome”, Ev also arranged a surprise party for me. Loads of friends turned up with food and pressies, so I’d like to thank (in no particular order) Lenise, James, Mike, Shannon, Joaquin, Shay, Jeff, Amy, Steven, Jamie, Chris, Grant, Brenda, Ella, […]

Stay away from Minis and Vivas!

WHEN I was a young Mut I used to watch a lot of telly. Seventies and early 80s television was a lot different than it is now; for starters, we only had three channels until the aptly-named Channel 4 appeared in 1982, 27 years after the the third channel, ITV, came along.

For reasons best known to the dark recesses of my subconscious, what sticks out in my mind the most from those days  —  apart from Morph, Clangers, The Goodies and that episode of Grange Hill when Jeremy Irvine drowned in the pool  —  are the public safety films that would occasionally appear between children’s shows […]

Gloat V

I THINK I’m going to like my new commute  —  156 miles on a quarter of a tank is going to save us some money, and with 359 mortgage payments left we sure […]

Getting warmer

HEY,” I thought as I sat in traffic on the 710/10 slip road (transition to you Yanks), “that doesn’t look good”. And indeed it wasn’t. For some reason my Mini was overheating to the point of recreating the Chernobyl explosion and I was on the verge of running out of petrol. Double bugger! So I did what any red-blooded male would do: I pulled off the road and called Ev, who told me to ring my mechanic, who told me to get the Mini towed. One call to Triple-A later I was sitting on the side of the road for over […]

Yay Mini!

SO THAT’S 402 miles on one tank, and there’s probably enough left to get up to 420. […]

The new hat’s here

AND not a minute too soon, as the current one (also a Mini hat) is in a state best described as “manky”. Anyway, this one commemorates Paddy Hopkirk’s win at the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in the No37 Mini (33 EJB to us anoraks fans).

In case you’re wondering what it would be like to drive a 10ft long, 100hp car at high speed over a twisting course, here’s Paddy Hopkirk taking a slightly more modern Mini for a spin in the 1994 rally as featured on Top Gear:

Glad I took a pic of that toy Mini...

HOLY shit! autoblog.com is using one of my photos to illustrate an article about how a British couple can’t get insurance for their chrome-plated Mini. And they credited me! Fame […]
