Hi. Welcome to Planet Mut. Established in 2004, it’s the perfect outlet for my more sociopathic tendencies. Email me at planetmut@gmail.com. If you want to read the five years’ worth of archives on the old HTML site, they’re here.

MY MAIN memory of this place is the terrifying realisation that there were cobwebs everywhere. Big ugly webs, too, full of bits of plants and dust. Apart from that, El Dorado Regional Park is not only very pretty but also surprisingly quiet given it’s bordered by the 605 freeway. And now the weather’s taken a turn for the better I want to go back and get more pics as the autumn sets in, although I doubt it’ll be as good as Flynn’s […]
FINALLY some content! We went to San Pedro on Sunday to take a tour of the SS Lane Victory, one of nine remaining World War II Victory ships out of 534 built. She also served in Korea and Vietnam. We had no idea she was docked in San Pedro below the Vincent Thomas Bridge until we went to take some night shots there a couple of weeks ago. As it’s only $3 to go aboard we ponied up the cash and took a look around. It also gave me a decent chance to use my 10mm wide-angle lens, which is how […]
ANGELS FLIGHT is a funicular railway (I’m not sure what that is, either) in the Bunker Hill district of Downtown LA. Built in 1901, it’s had a chequered history which includes several closures, two deaths, near-demolition and eventual dismantling and reconstruction.
Bunker Hill was at one time one of the most desirable residential areas of LA, and Angels Flight was designed to get people up the 315-ft, 33% gradient without all the effort of walking. A one-way, one-minute ride on one of the two cars — Sinai or Olivet — up or down cost just one cent.
In 1943 a sailor tried walking up the tracks and […]
BOB’S BIG BOY burgers are a Southern Californian legend, not just for the food but also for the iconic original restaurant in Riverside Drive, Burbank. Built in 1949 it’s now a California Point of Historical Interest and attracts loads of people interested in seeing its groundbreaking architecture and classic 50s diner/coffee shop interior. So after photographing the Liberty Belle I headed there for a burger before setting off for home.
Trouble is, I just discovered I went to the wrong bloody one. I had my suspicions when I couldn’t see the famously huge sign outside. These suspicions were confirmed today by our […]
AFTER visiting the zoo on Saturday I headed to Bob Hope Airport in Burbank to see the Liberty Belle, a restored World War II B17 bomber. It is possible to go for flights on her, but at $430 a pop I think Ev would happily beat me to death if I’d booked one.
Luckily, after the flights are over the plane is parked on the tarmac at the airport and open to visitors. Plenty of people showed up and got in line to climb on board; put it this way, if they ever remake Flying Fortresses for 21st-century people they’ll have to […]
THE pictures aren’t great thanks to me taking the 18-50mm lens instead of the 75-300mm (doh) but I’m still fairly happy with them. The best two are the tiger and […]
AFTER laughing our heads off at Eddie Izzard last night, we set out for a post-gig meal. We’d heard about The Original Pantry from a friend yesterday morning and as it’s only a couple of blocks from the Nokia Theatre we set off through the wild streets of downtown LA to Figueroa Street.
It’s a pretty small place and has been at its present location since 1950, although it was begun in 1924 on 9th and Figueroa St. Even at 11.40pm it was crowded and there was a wait, so we headed for the […]
AFTER two weeks of wanting to go there we finally made it… only to discover there was a wedding going on and we couldn’t go in. Inconsiderate bastards. So we wandered around the outside taking pics in the rain — here’s a […]
