Going Mexican in Monmouth

Yeah, it’s out of focus. Sue me.

WE’RE in the pub. Ev happens to mention that she fancies Mexican food and that the Old El Paso quesadilla kit (“Everything you need to make authentic quesadillas”  —  except the meat, cheese, veg and any hint of authenticity, that is) we tried a year or two ago just won’t cut it this time. Flynn breaks the amazing news that there’s a Mexican restaurant in, of all places, Monmouth. A stunned silence settles over the table, finally broken by my croaking, shocked voice: “What… seriously?”

Indeed seriously, so what else could we do but head there […]

Tenby

WE ONLY ended up in Tenby thanks to me getting hopelessly lost in the wilds of west Wales. After driving all over the shop for something like five hours thanks to Google Maps’ directions and seemingly never-ending roadworks, I gave up on my initial plan of finding this place to buy a wall plaque for the house (it’s the last from bottom) and headed for the coast. This change of plan came as something of a surprise to my navigator as she’d been asleep for most of the trip.

Tenby’s rightly famous for being a pretty fishing port in south-west Wales, although whoever […]

The annual torture

THE 2011 Six Nations kicks off on Friday, with Wales taking on England at home in the Millennium Stadium. My sis, her boyfriend, our cousin and her kid are all going (that’s two Welsh, one Scot, one English) so it should make for an interesting trip home depending on who wins. As per usual, here’s my preview of Wales’ games:

Feb 4 : England at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff

Can we? Will we? All that’s definite about Wales playing England is that by the end of it I’ll have screamed myself hoarse (depending, of course, that I can actually listen to it on […]

MANY thanks to James for sending […]

Dear Wales...

In about six hours you’ll face Italy in the last day of the 2010 Six Nations.

Please win.

I know you’ve had a tough tournament. Some, like my dad, might even say you’ve been bloody terrible since the first game against England and should be strung up like the bunch of hopeless buggers you are.

But I’m not my dad. Which in many ways is good, ‘cos if I was I’d be 72 and bald. I still have faith in you. Yes, there are times when I wonder if you’re actively trying to give the ball away and occasions when I honestly believe you think […]

In honour of St David's Day...

HERE’S a recipe for Welsh cakes. Welsh cakes truly are food of the Gods. Well, at least my nan’s were. Hot straight out of the oven, covered in butter and wolfed down with strong sweet tea. And that’s when I was 10. God knows how many I’d get through today. Millions, I suppose. I haven’t had Welsh cakes in ages. Maybe I’d better show Ev the recipe and drop some subtle hints along the lines of “make these or Emric gets it”.

Anyway, the recipe is here. If you’re outside the UK the video will not play thanks to our dear, dear friend […]

We get everywhere

THERE’S Ev and me sitting in Hof’s Hut last night having dinner when a voice says, “Good t-shirt. What part of Wales are you from?”

Cardiff,” I say.

Aberystwyth.”

I can’t believe it  —  this is the second time this year I’ve met someone from Wales in Hof’s Hut. As I always wear a Wales baseball cap or T-shirt I’m usually not that difficult to spot.

He asks if I’m on holiday and I explain that I live here. He asks if I keep in touch and I say, yes, we go home once a year and I listened to the rugby yesterday. His wife says that he’s trying to […]
