The elements that enhance the narrative development of this sequence is the fast paced editing, the music, the sound effects, the dialogue and the way all those are edited and mixed.
To illustrate that, every cut in this scene is made according to the music and the action for the purpose of creating the suspense and shaping the main question of the movie.
Furthermore, the opening scene depicts the whole style and the essence of the film predisposing the viewer for the theme of this movie.
Automatically, from this point, the viewer knows what is happening but simultaneously the suspense is increasing.
However, there are a lot of other scenes where the editing deepens into the story. The most significant examples, except the opening sequence, are the scene where two boys are hiding on the trees from the police when another scene the scene with the fish interrupts this one Figure 2.
These juxtapositions of images create the basic meaning of this society: big fish eat small fish. Through his experiments and research, Kuleshov discovered that depending on how shots are assembled the audience will attach a specific meaning or emotion to it.
In his experiment, Kuleshov cut an actor with shots of three different subjects: a hot plate of soup, a girl in a coffin, and a pretty woman lying in a couch.
The footage of the actor was the same expressionless gaze. Yet the audience raved his performance, saying first he looked hungry, then sad, then lustful.
On the other hand, the use of the voice over gives a cinematic aspect helping the story to unfold through the eyes of a witness but also gives the certain beats for the action or the information to be revealed.
The use of music highlights a lot of parts of the movie functioning as an extra factor of creating meaning. Most of the sound transitions smoothens the transitions from scene to scene.
Although, in some cases, the sound triggers the cutting of the shot in a way that improves the narration. For example, in the scene in the hotel where the cutting of the shots happens at the moment when a gunshot is heard.
Figure 3 - Buscape, the narrator of the film 8 She also adds in her book that in this film, the music does not underscore the mood of the film.
The arguments of this paper are discussed through the citation of certain bibliography and examples from viewing the film.
The main purpose of this research is to breakdown and analyze the mechanics used to create this film and which purposes they fulfill.
Generally, the techniques used to shape the overall meaning and story of the City of god vary but they manage to create a general mood and style which depict the theme of the feature.
The fast-pace editing, the use of specific video transitions, the non-diegetic sound effects, the original score, the voice over and the way all of these elements are mixed and juxtaposed is unique and stimulating.

Welcome to the City of God. I have made an effort to watch all the movies in IMDb's top rated list. As of now, I'm looking for a place where the DVD for Sunset Blvd.
But this movie is one of the movies I've seen that's on the list. And I find it an amazing film currently 5 on my top 10 list. What I enjoy about this film is the visual look of the film, but also the way the director puts you in the story.
At the end of the film you have become friends with just about everyone in the film, even though some of the characters are very despicable people.
The violence hits you in the chest like a load of bricks sometimes, especially when you recognize that many of the kids involved in the violence are right around 10 or 11, but you also realize that this reflects the culture of the slum these kids live in.
Gangster films always seem to make for good dramas e. This film is no different, but it shows the life of children in places where bribery and corruption reigns supreme.
It also shows the bravery of many of these people when even the government won't stick up for them. If you're thinking of starting to watch some foreign language films, this is a good place to start.
It is a classic IMO among films made in languages besides English. I did find that the subtitles in this film were done rather poorly they displayed on my DVD player at the wrong times and it took a few plays to figure out who was saying what.
But I think the film itself is a truly great film. All Titles TV Episodes Celebs Companies Keywords Advanced Search. Sign In. Get a sneak peek of the new version of this page.

According to Meirelles, amateur actors were used for two reasons: the lack of available professional black actors, and the desire for authenticity.
Meirelles explained: "Today I can open a casting call and have black actors, but just ten years ago this possibility did not exist.
In Brazil, there were three or four young black actors and at the same time I felt that actors from the middle class could not make the film.
I needed authenticity. Beginning around , about a hundred children and young people were hand-picked and placed into an "actors' workshop" for several months.
A lot came from improvisation , as it was thought better to create an authentic, gritty atmosphere. This way, the inexperienced cast soon learned to move and act naturally.
Help groups were set up to help those involved in the production to build more promising futures. Meirelles went into the film with the intention of staying true to the "casual nature" of the violence in the novel by Lins.
Critic Jean Oppenheimer wrote on the production of the film saying that: "A second guiding principle was to avoid glamorising the violence" and that "many of the killings are either shown indistinctly or kept out of frame.
Because the real Cidade de Deus favela was in conflict, a large majority of the film was shot in Cidade Alta, a different favela within Rio.
During the production, slumlords did not allow for the production company to have their own security, so local security guards were hired for the safety of the set.
